Amritsar, July 18:
Amritsar Police have detained a software engineer in connection with a spate of threatening emails that warned of plans to blow up the Golden Temple, one of Sikhism’s holiest shrines.

The suspect has been identified as Shubham Dubey, a resident of Faridabad, Haryana. According to Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, Dubey was taken into custody for questioning after digital evidence allegedly linked him to the threatening messages.

“This is a partial success,” Bhullar said at a press briefing on Friday. “The individual is currently under detention, and his laptop and mobile phones have been seized. All electronic devices are being sent for forensic analysis.”

Since July 14, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) — the apex religious body managing gurdwaras in Punjab — has reportedly received six threatening emails warning of an attack on the Golden Temple. The emails triggered high alert across Amritsar, with security being significantly stepped up in and around the temple complex.

Bhullar added that central investigative agencies have joined the probe, indicating the seriousness of the case and the possibility of a wider conspiracy. “The suspect has links with multiple software firms. His digital footprint and professional background are under close scrutiny,” he said.

While the police have not yet revealed the motive behind the threats, authorities are treating the case with utmost sensitivity given the religious and emotional significance of the Golden Temple.

As of now, no formal arrest has been announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.

“We are taking every threat seriously. The safety and sanctity of the Golden Temple is our top priority,” Bhullar added.Further details are awaited as the forensic analysis of the suspect’s digital devices progresses.
