New Delhi: In a significant development in the high-profile Chhatrasal Stadium murder case, the Supreme Court on Wednesday cancelled the bail granted to Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar in connection with the killing of former junior national wrestling champion Sagar Dhankar.

A bench comprising Justices Sanjay Karol and Prashant Kumar Mishra set aside the Delhi High Court’s March 4 order, which had allowed Kumar to walk free on bail. The apex court directed the decorated wrestler to surrender before the concerned authorities within one week.

Kumar, along with several associates, is accused of brutally assaulting Dhankar on the night of May 4, 2021, at the Chhatrasal Stadium in Delhi. The assault, reportedly linked to an alleged property dispute, also left two of Dhankar’s friends seriously injured.

According to the postmortem report, Dhankar sustained fatal cerebral damage caused by the impact of a blunt object. The incident sparked a nationwide outcry, given Kumar’s stature in Indian sports and his Olympic accolades.

The case has been under intense public and media scrutiny, with investigators alleging that Kumar played a central role in orchestrating and participating in the attack. His bail plea had been contested by the prosecution, which cited the severity of the charges, the possibility of influencing witnesses, and the potential risk of tampering with evidence. With the Supreme Court’s order, the trial is set to proceed with Kumar back in judicial custody.
