New Phase for SAD Ahead of 2027 Elections
After Parkash Singh Badal’s Passing, His Grandson Emerges as the New Face of the Party

Chandigarh: In a significant development signalling the formal political rise of the third generation of the Badal family, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) chief Sukhbir Singh Badal and his son Anantveer Singh Badal have begun coordinated grassroots outreach in Gidderbaha and Lambi.
The move—coming just three days after Sukhbir announced his candidature for the 2027 Assembly election—marks the most unambiguous indication yet that Anantveer is stepping into active politics, potentially reshaping SAD strategy in the coming years.
Political watchers believe that after the passing of former CM Parkash Singh Badal, the party is attempting to consolidate its core vote base by presenting a blend of legacy and youthful leadership.
Anantveer Begins Campaigning for Zila Parishad & Panchayat Samiti Polls
As part of his initiation into public life, Anantveer Singh Badal has been actively campaigning for the upcoming Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, meeting voters across villages in Lambi.
His quiet, approachable style—walking into homes, greeting elders, interacting with youth—has drawn favourable early impressions.
Travelling in a small cavalcade, the young Badal avoided making formal speeches but focused on building rapport at the grassroots, a style reminiscent of Parkash Singh Badal’s early political work. Village residents, especially women, said they were pleased by his demeanour: “He didn’t speak, but he seems well-mannered and simple. We will be happy if the Akali Dal gives him a chance,” said a woman in Panjawa village. His participation in rural poll campaigning signals the party’s intent to prepare him for a larger role leading up to the 2027 elections.
Sukhbir Badal Returns to Gidderbaha, Revives Emotional Connect
Meanwhile, Sukhbir Singh Badal campaigned across seven villages in Gidderbaha, emphasising the historical bond between the constituency and the Badal family. “Don’t take the zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections lightly… I will continue to serve you throughout my life,” Sukhbir told the gatherings. He reminded voters that Parkash Singh Badal represented Gidderbaha five times, saying:
“You gave so much love to Badal Sahib, and he always respected you. We do not have any group except the Badal group.”
Anantveer in Lambi: Walking the Path of His Grandfather
Lambi, long regarded as the political fortress of Parkash Singh Badal, lost to AAP’s Gurmeet Singh Khuddian in 2022.
Anantveer’s presence there—especially during rural elections—is being read as an attempt to rebuild the family’s connection with the constituency.
His entry is strategic:
-
It appeals to older voters who revere the Badal legacy.
-
It energises youth seeking fresh leadership.
-
It signals unity and continuity within the SAD during a sensitive transition period.
What Anantveer’s Entry Means for SAD’s Future
With SAD facing electoral setbacks and losing its towering patriarch, the party is banking on Anantveer to:
-
Reassert the Badal legacy in key constituencies.
-
Strengthen ties with rural Sikh voters.
-
Project a youthful, future-ready leadership.
-
Offer organisational continuity as SAD prepares for 2027
While Sukhbir remains the face of the upcoming Assembly elections, political analysts say Anantveer’s debut is the most significant structural move by SAD since the loss of Parkash Singh Badal.
A Pivotal Moment in Akali Politics
As Punjab’s political landscape undergoes rapid change, the emergence of Anantveer Singh Badal marks a defining moment for the Akali Dal. His soft launch during the zila parishad and panchayat samiti polls is expected to evolve into a full-fledged political role, setting the stage for a generational shift within one of Punjab’s most influential political families.
