Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann on Monday said he would present himself before Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a humble and devout Sikh, and not in his official capacity as the Chief Minister.

In a post on X, Mann said Sri Akal Takht Sahib holds the highest spiritual and temporal authority for Sikhs and that every directive issued by it is to be accepted with utmost reverence. “Any command or order from Sri Akal Takht Sahib Ji is acceptable with full respect and will be obeyed. I will walk barefoot before Sri Akal Takht Sahib as a humble Sikh, not as a Chief Minister,” he stated.

The Chief Minister acknowledged that the President of India is scheduled to visit Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, on the same day to attend a conference, but affirmed that he would still appear before the Akal Takht in compliance with its directive.

“For me, Sri Akal Takht Sahib Ji is above everything. The command received from that sacred Takht is, was, and will always remain supreme for my family and me,” Mann said, reiterating his faith in Sikh institutions and traditions.

The statement comes amid heightened discourse over the relationship between the Punjab government and Sikh religious bodies, with the Chief Minister seeking to underline his personal religious commitment and respect for the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
