Chandigarh: Two accused involved in the firing incident at a chemist shop in Sector 32 were arrested following a brief encounter with the Chandigarh Police Crime Branch near the Sector 39 Grain Market early Wednesday morning.

The encounter took place around 6 am, during which both shooters sustained bullet injuries to their legs. The injured accused have been identified as Rahul and Rocky. They were immediately taken to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 16 (GMCH-16) for treatment. A third accused, Preet, who was allegedly driving the getaway car, was also arrested on the spot.

According to police officials, a Crime Branch team signalled a suspicious car to stop during routine checking. Instead of complying, the occupants attempted to flee and opened fire, forcing the police to retaliate in self-defence. During the exchange, both shooters were injured and overpowered.

The arrests are linked to the recent firing at Sevak Pharmacy in Sector 32, where two youths on a scooter had opened fire at the shop. At the time of the attack, the shop owner’s son, Tanish, was present at the counter and narrowly escaped unhurt. He immediately alerted his family, following which the shop owner, Jagdish, a resident of Sector 32, reached the spot and informed the police.

After the incident, teams from Sector 34 Police Station, the Crime Branch, the Operation Cell and the District Crime Branch rushed to the scene. A forensic team recovered one empty cartridge from the pharmacy. CCTV footage showed two assailants arriving on an Activa scooter, firing at the shop and fleeing, which played a key role in identifying the accused.

Police said interrogation of the arrested and injured accused is underway. Investigators are also probing the possible involvement of other associates, suspected gangster links, and allegations pointing to a potential police personnel accomplice.
