Chandigarh: Senior Congress leader and former Punjab Cabinet minister Lal Singh passed away on Saturday following prolonged illness. He was around 83 years old. Lal Singh had been admitted to a hospital in Mohali for some time and had been battling multiple health ailments.
Six-Time MLA, Congress Stalwart
A six-time MLA, Lal Singh was considered a stalwart of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, with a political career spanning over four decades. He remained closely associated with the Sanaur constituency for nearly 45 years, having first contested elections from the seat in 1977. Known for his organisational strength and grassroots connect, he commanded respect across party lines.
Loyal Party Leader
Lal Singh was regarded as a loyal and seasoned Congress politician, who stood firmly with the party through changing political phases. His experience and political acumen made him an influential figure in Punjab politics, irrespective of who was in power.
During the 2017 Assembly elections, he was denied a ticket from Sanaur due to the party’s “one family, one ticket” policy. His son Rajinder Singh was instead fielded from Samana and went on to win.
Leaders Condole Demise
Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring described him as a “grand old wise man of Punjab politics,” saying his demise is a great loss to the party and the state.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Sukhbir Singh Badal also expressed condolences, recalling Lal Singh’s lifelong contribution to public service. With his passing, Punjab has lost one of its most experienced and widely respected political figures, whose legacy spans decades of public life and service.
