NEW DELHI: The cancellation of NEET UG 2026 following serious allegations of a paper leak has plunged lakhs of medical aspirants and their families across India into uncertainty, confusion and anxiety.

After the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate), conducted on May 3, was scrapped due to concerns about the examination’s integrity, students are now grappling with several urgent questions: Will they have to pay the examination fee again? Will fresh registration be required? Will the syllabus or exam pattern change? What happens to old admit cards? And will MBBS admissions be delayed now?

The National Testing Agency has now issued key clarifications addressing many of these concerns.

Why was NEET UG 2026 cancelled?

The NTA officially cancelled NEET UG 2026 after widespread allegations surfaced claiming that the question paper had been leaked before the examination.

The controversy intensified after investigations by the Rajasthan Special Operations Group reportedly uncovered evidence of a “guess paper” that allegedly matched a substantial portion of the actual examination paper circulated before the test.

According to preliminary findings, nearly 120 questions — including approximately 90 from Biology and 30 from Chemistry — reportedly matched the final paper.

Following inputs from law enforcement agencies and growing nationwide outrage, the Centre ordered a comprehensive investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation and subsequently cancelled the examination.

The development has triggered one of the biggest examination crises in recent years, affecting lakhs of candidates aspiring for admission into MBBS, BDS and AYUSH courses across the country.

Will students have to pay the examination fee again?

No.

The NTA has clarified that students will not be required to pay any additional examination fee for the re-test.

Will the previously paid fee be refunded?

Yes.

According to the agency, the examination fee already deposited by candidates for the cancelled May 3 examination will be refunded.

However, the NTA has not yet announced the detailed mechanism or timeline for processing refunds.

Will fresh registration be required?

No.

The NTA has clarified that all registration details, candidature data and examination centres selected during the original NEET UG 2026 application cycle will remain valid for the re-examination.

Students will therefore not be required to fill out fresh application forms or repeat the registration process.

Will the syllabus change?

At present, no major changes to the syllabus are expected.

The re-examination will most likely be conducted using the same NEET UG 2026 syllabus that had already been officially notified earlier.

Since the re-test falls within the same academic admission cycle, authorities are unlikely to alter the syllabus midway, as doing so could create further confusion and legal complications.

Will the exam pattern change?

The overall structure of the examination is expected to remain unchanged.

This means candidates can expect:

  • The same subjects
  • The same marking scheme
  • The same duration
  • The same number of questions

However, officials are likely to significantly tighten security arrangements to restore confidence in the examination system.

The revised examination process may include:

  • Stronger biometric verification
  • Stricter frisking procedures
  • Earlier reporting timings
  • Enhanced CCTV surveillance
  • Tighter paper transportation protocols
  • Increased monitoring at examination centres
Will old admit cards remain valid?

No.

Fresh admit cards will be issued for the re-examination.

The admit cards generated for the cancelled May 3 examination will no longer remain valid.

Students have been advised to monitor official NTA announcements for updated regularly admit card schedules and examination instructions.

When will the re-examination be held?

The NTA has not yet announced the fresh examination date.

The agency has said revised dates for the NEET UG 2026 re-test will be declared soon through official communication channels.

Students are being advised to rely only on official notifications and avoid misinformation circulating on social media.

Will medical admissions and counselling be delayed?

Most likely, yes.

Since NEET UG serves as the gateway for admissions to MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other undergraduate medical programmes across India, a nationwide re-examination is expected to push back the entire admission calendar.

This could delay:

  • MBBS admissions
  • BDS admissions
  • AYUSH admissions
  • State counselling rounds
  • Private medical college admissions
  • All India quota counselling

The final timeline will depend largely on how quickly the re-examination is conducted, evaluated and followed by result declaration.

Anxiety rises among students and parents.

The cancellation has triggered widespread emotional stress among aspirants who had spent months — and in many cases years — preparing for one of India’s most competitive examinations.

Many students have expressed frustration over being forced to undergo another round of preparation despite not being responsible for the alleged irregularities.

Education experts say the incident has once again raised questions about examination security, accountability, and the pressure-heavy structure of India’s entrance examination system.

With lakhs of careers hanging in the balance, all eyes are now on the NTA and the Centre to conduct a transparent and credible re-examination process while ensuring that deserving students do not suffer further uncertainty.
