New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday became the longest-serving head of a government in India, surpassing the previous record held by former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling. According to official figures, Modi completed 8,931 days in office as head of government, overtaking Chamling’s record of 8,930 days.
Leaders Laud Milestone
The milestone was marked by congratulatory messages from members of the Union Cabinet, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh leading the tributes.
“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi is now the longest-serving head of a government in India. Pure devotion to the nation and its people defines PM Modi Ji,” Singh said in a post on social media.
He added that Modi’s journey — from serving as Chief Minister of Gujarat to leading the country as Prime Minister — reflects “unwavering commitment, integrity and tireless service.”
Record Across Roles
Modi has served as Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014 before becoming Prime Minister in May 2014, and has remained in office since. The combined tenure across both roles has now made him the longest-serving head of government at any level in India, surpassing Chamling, who served as Sikkim’s Chief Minister for over 24 years.
Political Significance
The milestone comes at a time when Modi continues to lead the government at the Centre, marking over a decade in office as Prime Minister and extending his record in Indian political history.
