Patiala/Gwalior: The Punjab Police has arrested AAP MLA Harmeet Pathanmajra from near Gwalior following what officials described as a “meticulously planned 48-hour operation” based on credible technical inputs. Pathanmajra had been on the run for several weeks, posing a challenge for police teams that were conducting searches across seven states.

Arrest After Technical Surveillance

Confirming the development, Patiala SSP Varun Sharma said the operation was led by SP Vaibhav Chaudhary and involved sustained tracking efforts. “For the past few months, six teams from Patiala police were working minutely on every detail, which led us to the accused,” Sharma said.

A senior police official said that while it was being projected that the MLA had fled abroad, possibly to Australia, investigators received a breakthrough through technical surveillance.

“Two days ago, a team got a lead of a hotel Wi-Fi being used near Gwalior. Further analysis showed a UK number being used on that network, which was traced back to the suspect,” the official said.

‘Operation Pathan’

The arrest was carried out under a coordinated plan codenamed “Operation Pathan”, involving multiple agencies. Officials said the operation succeeded due to real-time intelligence sharing, coordination with counter-intelligence units, and support from inter-state police teams. Pathanmajra had been absconding following controversy over his statements against senior AAP leaders and allegations, including a complaint by a Zirakpur-based woman accusing him of sexual exploitation and threats. Police said further legal proceedings are underway following his arrest.
