Chandigarh: The tragic suicide of two farmer brothers in Harineau village of Faridkot has triggered widespread outrage, with farmer organisations announcing a joint meeting on March 26 to press for justice and relief for the affected family.

Leaders of the Kirti Kisan Union described the incident as a grim reflection of Punjab’s deepening agrarian crisis, alleging that mounting debt and financial distress continue to push farmers to the brink.

Farmers Flag Debt Crisis

Union leaders Rajinder Singh Deep Singh Wala and Rajinder Singh Kingra said the deaths underline the growing burden on small and marginal farmers, many of whom are struggling with loans and a lack of institutional support.

“Despite a change in governments, there have been no concrete steps for debt relief or farmer-friendly policies,” the leaders said, calling the incident “heart-rending”.

Call for Statewide Mobilisation

A meeting held at the village gurdwara discussed the situation and charted out a strategy to secure compensation and long-term support for the bereaved family. Farmer organisations have appealed to unions across Punjab to join the March 26 meeting, aiming to build a united front on the issue.

Speaker Assures Support

Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan visited the village and met the grieving family, assuring that the state government would extend all possible assistance. Harineau village falls in the Kotkapura Assembly segment, represented by Sandhwan.

Wider Agrarian Concerns

The incident has once again brought the issue of Punjab’s agrarian distress to the forefront, with farmer groups demanding a debt waiver, policy reforms, and sustainable income support mechanisms to prevent such tragedies in the future. With the issue gaining momentum, the upcoming joint meeting is expected to shape the next course of agitation by farmer unions in the state.
