HOSHIARPUR: A tense and emotionally charged rescue operation continued late into Friday night after a four-year-old boy fell into an open borewell in Chak Samana village near the Hoshiarpur-Dasuya road in Punjab.
The child, identified as Vanshu, reportedly slipped into the deep borehole while playing near the site, triggering panic among villagers and an immediate response from the district administration and emergency teams.
The child was trapped nearly 25 feet deep.
According to officials and residents, the boy is believed to be trapped at a depth of nearly 25 feet inside the borewell, reportedly lodged between the borewell wall and the pipe casing.
Soon after the incident, villagers raised an alarm and informed authorities, following which rescue operations were launched on a war footing.
Officials said oxygen was being continuously supplied to the child through pipes inserted into the borewell to ensure his survival during the rescue effort.
Special cameras were also lowered into the narrow shaft to monitor the child’s condition and determine his exact position.
Deputy Commissioner reaches the site.
Aashika Jain, along with senior district and police officials, rushed to the village soon after receiving information about the incident and began supervising rescue operations at the spot.
Emergency teams from the fire brigade, the police, and the local administration joined the operation immediately.
Volunteers of Baba Deep Singh Sewa Dal from Garhdiwala also reached the site to assist rescue personnel and support the anxious family.
A parallel pit is being dug to reach the child.
As part of the rescue strategy, a JCB machine was deployed to dig a parallel pit alongside the borewell to reach the trapped child safely.
Rescue officials said the process was delicate and time-consuming due to the borewell’s narrow diameter and the need to prevent further soil collapse around the shaft.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has also been informed and is expected to join the operation with specialised rescue equipment and technical expertise.
Villagers gather, prayers continue
Large numbers of worried villagers gathered around the rescue site as operations continued late into the evening.
Many residents were seen praying for the child’s safety, while others assisted officials in crowd management and logistical support.
The incident once again highlighted the recurring danger posed by abandoned and uncovered borewells in rural areas, which have led to several tragic accidents involving children across the country over the years.
Authorities have not yet indicated how long the rescue operation may continue, but officials said every possible effort was being made to pull the child out safely.
