Gurugram Police on Saturday clarified that 25-year-old former state-level tennis player Radhika Yadav, who was allegedly shot dead by her father, did not run a formal tennis academy but trained aspiring players by booking courts at various locations — a practice her father, Deepak Yadav, reportedly disapproved of.
Radhika was killed at point-blank range at the family’s double-storey home in Sushant Lok, Sector 57, Gurugram, on Thursday. The accused, Deepak Yadav (49), allegedly fired multiple bullets at her following repeated disputes over her continued coaching activities.
Earlier, police had said the tension stemmed from Radhika’s income from a tennis academy. However, they later clarified that Deepak, who owns multiple rental properties and is financially stable, was not dependent on his daughter’s income. Instead, he was upset over her refusal to stop coaching at rented courts despite his repeated objections.
“She did not own an academy. Her father had been asking her to stop training others, but she continued, leading to frequent arguments,” an investigating officer said.
Deepak, who confessed to the crime, was remanded to one-day police custody on Friday. During this period, police recovered five used cartridges and one live round from his residence. He was also taken to a village in Pataudi as part of the investigation. He is expected to be produced in court again on Saturday.
Dismissing speculation about her social media activity or a music video she had featured in being a trigger, Inspector Vinod Kumar from Sector 56 police station said:
“The video in question was uploaded in 2023 and has no link to the murder. The accused has clearly stated that he didn’t want his daughter to earn through training.”
According to family sources, Deepak had supported Radhika’s tennis journey since childhood. However, disagreements over her professional choices had intensified in recent weeks.
The post-mortem report revealed Radhika sustained four gunshot wounds — three to the back and one to the shoulder. Her last rites were performed in the family’s native village in Wazirabad on Friday.
