New Delhi: AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal on Friday launched a sharp attack on the BJP, alleging that it had “once again betrayed the people of Punjab” following the dramatic exit of seven Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MPs.
In a brief but pointed post on X, Kejriwal said, “BJP has once again betrayed Punjabis,” framing the mass defection as a political assault on the state’s mandate.
Seven MPs Exit, AAP Strength Shrinks
The controversy erupted after senior leaders Raghav Chadha and Sandeep Pathak, addressing a joint press conference, confirmed their decision to join the BJP. Chadha claimed that nearly two-thirds of AAP’s Rajya Sabha MPs had quit the party, forming a separate faction to merge with the ruling party at the Centre.
According to Chadha, seven out of AAP’s 10 Rajya Sabha MPs have resigned, significantly weakening the party’s presence in the Upper House. Among those who have exited are prominent names such as Swati Maliwal and Harbhajan Singh.
Political Shockwaves in Punjab
The development has sent shockwaves through Punjab’s political landscape, with AAP portraying it as a calculated move by the BJP to undermine the state government led by Bhagwant Mann.
Kejriwal’s remarks, though brief, underline the party’s strategy to present the defections as not just an internal split but a larger political conspiracy against Punjab’s interests.
Battle Lines Drawn
With AAP’s Rajya Sabha strength reduced to just three MPs, the episode marks one of the biggest internal ruptures in the party’s history. At the same time, it has intensified the confrontation between AAP and BJP, setting the stage for a sharper political battle in Punjab as well as at the national level.
