Chandigarh , July16,UPDATED:7.55PM
Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) leader and party chief Abhay Singh Chautala has allegedly received a death threat through a voice message sent to his son Karan Chautala via WhatsApp, triggering serious security concerns within the political outfit.
Karan Chautala, addressing a press conference in Chandigarh on Wednesday, revealed that the threat was received late on Tuesday night. Around 11 pm, Karan said he received a WhatsApp call from an unknown international number, which was abruptly disconnected. Minutes later, a voice message from the same number landed in his inbox, containing threatening and abusive language directed at his father.”The unidentified caller used objectionable language and warned that my father should stay out of their way, or he would meet the same fate as ‘the pradhan’,” Karan said, referring to the chilling reference made in the message to INLD’s state president Nafe Singh Rathee, who was shot dead in Bahadurgarh, Jhajjar in February 2024.
“Final Warning” Sent to Private Secretary Too
According to Karan, the same foreign number also sent a threat message to Abhay Chautala’s private secretary. The message allegedly called it a “final warning”, intensifying fears of a targeted threat.
Karan said he has formally lodged a complaint with the Chandigarh Police, urging them to trace the source of the threat and take immediate preventive measures.
History of Threats and Security Concerns
Karan pointed out that this was not the first time his father has been targeted. “In July last year, my father had received a similar threat. The Haryana Police had then registered a case and subsequently, Y-category security cover was provided to him,” he said.
He added that the assassination of INLD’s state chief Nafe Singh Rathee earlier this year had already shaken the party, especially since the assailants remain untraceable to date. “Our state president was gunned down in broad daylight and his killers are still at large. We cannot take such threats lightly,” Karan said.
Raising Voice Against Drug Mafia and Crime
Karan Chautala hinted that the threats could be linked to Abhay Chautala’s consistent stance against drug trafficking and the deteriorating law-and-order situation in Haryana. “Our family has been vocal against drug syndicates and rising crime. This may be a reason we are being targeted,” he alleged.
Calling for immediate and strict action, Karan said the safety of his family and other party leaders is now a serious concern. “We fear for our lives. The authorities must investigate this thoroughly and ensure our security,” he urged. The Chandigarh Police has acknowledged receipt of the complaint and said the matter is under investigation.
