New Delhi: The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has granted ‘Z’ category security cover to Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, a day after she was assaulted during a public hearing at her residence. According to MHA sources, the new arrangement, comprising 18–20 CRPF personnel, was put in place on Wednesday evening. Until now, Gupta was under the security cover of the Delhi Police.

The decision followed a review of the threat perception after Wednesday’s incident, in which a man from Gujarat attacked the Chief Minister while posing as a complainant at a ‘Jan Sunwai’.

The attacker, identified as Rajeshbhai Khimjibhai Sakariya (41), first handed some papers to Gupta before suddenly grabbing her hand and attempting to pull her hair. He was quickly overpowered by security and attendees. The Delhi Police has registered a case against him under charges including attempt to murder.

Under the ‘Z’ category cover, a protectee is guarded by 18–20 personnel, including personal security officers, escorts, and a pilot vehicle. For comparison, ‘Z plus’ security entails almost double the manpower, with reinforced protection for residence and convoy.
