Heavy Rains Disrupt Life in Himachal; Schools Shut in Six Districts, 484 Roads Blocked

Shimla: Torrential rains continued to batter Himachal Pradesh, throwing life out of gear as schools and colleges were closed in six districts,the  and hundreds of roads, including two national highways, remained blocked for traffic.

The state meteorological department has issued a yellow warning for heavy rain in isolated areas across two to seven districts till August 30. Educational institutions, except residential schools, were ordered shut in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Una, Solan, Mandi and LahaulSpiti districts, officials said.

According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), 484 roads were closed as of Sunday night, including 245 in Mandi and 102 in Kullu. Two key highways — NH-154A (Chamba–Pathankot) and NH-305 (Aut–Sainj) — have also been blocked.

The heavy downpour has severely impacted power and water supply infrastructure. Officials said 941 electricity transformers and 95 water supply schemes have been disrupted across the state.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, Himachal Pradesh has recorded alarming damage:

  • 155 deaths in rain-related incidents

  • 37 people missing

  • 77 flash floods

  • 40 cloudbursts

  • 79 major landslides

The SEOC estimated that the state has already suffered losses worth ₹2,348 crore this monsoon season.

Moderate to heavy showers have continued in several parts since Sunday night, with fresh landslides and road blockages reported from multiple districts. Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious in view of the continuing weather alerts.
