Mandi/Shimla: A devastating landslide struck the Jangambag area in Sundernagar subdivision of Mandi district on Tuesday evening, killing six people — including four members of one family — and leaving another person missing, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The sudden collapse of the hillside buried two residential houses and also swept away a passerby on a scooter. Residents said they heard loud rumbling noises just moments before tonnes of debris rolled down, leaving no time for escape.
Mandi SP Sakshi Verma said, “A massive rescue operation was launched immediately after the incident. Despite extremely challenging conditions, all six bodies were retrieved by late Tuesday night.”
The victims have been identified as Gurpreet Singh (35), his wife Bharti (30), their daughter Kirat (3), grandmother Shanti Devi (70), and Surender Kaur (56). The sixth victim, yet to be formally identified, was a man riding a scooty through the area when the landslide struck.
Rescue teams, comprising NDRF, local police, and volunteers, are still searching for Rahul, who is believed to be trapped under the debris along with his vehicle.
The incident has once again highlighted the increasing frequency of landslides in Himachal Pradesh during this monsoon season, which has already caused significant loss of life and property across the hill state.
Authorities have urged people living in landslide-prone zones to remain alert, while disaster response teams continue round-the-clock monitoring and clearing operations.
