Tarntaran: A voter turnout of 60.95 per cent was recorded in the Tarn Taran Assembly by-election on Tuesday, as polling concluded peacefully amid tight security arrangements across the border constituency.
According to the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Sibin C, polling remained incident-free and orderly throughout the day. “We thank the voters of Tarn Taran for coming out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right,” he said, adding that the final turnout figures will be updated on Wednesday once all polling parties return and complete data entries.
Voting, which began at 7 a.m., continued till 6 p.m. across all polling stations. As per Election Commission data, voter enthusiasm picked up steadily through the day — 11 per cent turnout was recorded till 9 a.m., which rose to 23.35 per cent by 11 a.m., 36.62 per cent by 1 p.m., 48.84 per cent by 3 p.m., and 59.21 per cent by 5 p.m., before settling at 60.95 per cent by the close of polling.
The by-election was necessitated following the death of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Kashmir Sohal in June. A total of 15 candidates were in the fray this time, with polling deciding their fate for the single-member seat in the border district.
In comparison, the Tarn Taran Assembly constituency had registered a higher turnout of 65.81 per cent during the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. Officials said the entire polling exercise was conducted under multi-layered security arrangements, with adequate deployment of paramilitary and state police personnel to ensure a smooth and secure voting process. Counting of votes will be held on November 14, after which the new representative of Tarn Taran in the Punjab Legislative Assembly will be declared.
