Panchkula: The Haryana Congress on Wednesday staged a massive protest outside the BJP’s state headquarters, Panchkamal, in Panchkula, following a Delhi court’s refusal to take cognisance of the Enforcement Directorate’s money laundering complaint in the National Herald case.
Thousands of Congress leaders and workers, including MLAs, former MLAs, district presidents and senior party functionaries, marched from the Gymkhana Club to the BJP office, where they held a sit-in and raised slogans against the Centre, accusing it of misusing central agencies for political vendetta.
The protest was led by former Haryana Chief Minister and Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Haryana Congress president Rao Narendra Singh. Addressing the gathering, Hooda said the court’s order had exposed the “illegal and politically motivated” actions of the ED and the central government.
“The court has made it clear that the ED’s action was unlawful. This proves that central agencies are being misused to harass opposition leaders. False cases were filed against Congress leaders with political malice, but truth has prevailed,” Hooda said, describing the case against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as “completely motivated”.
Rao Narendra Singh said similar protests were held outside BJP offices across the country as part of a nationwide call by the Congress. “The massive participation of workers reflects the public anger against the BJP’s unconstitutional and illegal actions,” he said.
A heavy police force was deployed outside the BJP office, with barricades erected to prevent protesters from advancing. Some Congress workers climbed onto the barricades while chanting slogans to register their protest.
The Congress has termed the Delhi court’s order in the National Herald case a moral and legal victory, reiterating its charge that the ED action was part of a sustained campaign of political intimidation against the Opposition.
