Chandigarh: A no-confidence motion moved by the Congress against the Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government in Haryana was defeated on Friday through a voice vote after Congress MLAs staged a walkout from the Assembly, alleging that the Chief Minister failed to give satisfactory replies to the issues raised.
Responding sharply to the Opposition, Saini said the Congress had followed a familiar script. “Even in February 2024, the Congress brought a no-confidence motion, made allegations and then ran away after staging a walkout,” he remarked.
With Congress members absent, Speaker Harvinder Kalyan put the motion to vote, and it was rejected following a five-hour debate that stretched till 10.15 pm.
In the 90-member Haryana Vidhan Sabha, the BJP enjoys a majority with 48 MLAs, while the Congress has 37. The INLD has two members, and three MLAs are Independents.
The Congress had accused the government of failures on multiple fronts, including the poor condition of sports infrastructure, alleged vote theft, and misuse of government machinery to form the BJP government after the October 2024 Assembly elections.
Tensions flared at the start of the Chief Minister’s reply when senior Congress leader Raghuvir Singh Kadian, who moved the motion, objected to some of Saini’s remarks. Stressing the gravity of the exercise, Kadian said a no-confidence motion was a serious democratic instrument and should not be trivialised. Saini, however, denied using any unparliamentary language, saying his expressions reflected common rural idiom and reaffirmed his respect for Kadian.
