Amritsar: The probe into the disappearance of 328 sacred saroops of Sri Guru Granth Sahib gathered pace on Sunday with fresh arrests and extensive search operations conducted across Punjab and Chandigarh.
An official spokesperson of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) said former employee of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC), Kanwaljit Singh, has been arrested for his alleged direct role in serious irregularities related to the maintenance and handling of religious scriptures. He is also accused of being involved in the unauthorised preparation and storage of the sacred saroops.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the SIT carried out coordinated searches at 14 locations on Saturday. These included two sites in Chandigarh, eight in Amritsar, and one each in Gurdaspur, Ropar, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar (Rural).
During the raids, the investigation teams seized seven mobile phones, three tablets, two laptops, one digital storage device, along with several financial records and documents suspected to be incriminating.
The SIT spokesperson said the seized electronic devices would undergo detailed forensic analysis. He added that the financial records are also being closely examined, particularly transactions involving payments made by companies allegedly linked to several individuals, including political figures. These financial trails are now under scrutiny as part of the more exhaustive investigation.
According to the SIT, 16 persons have been named in the FIR registered at Police Station C-Division under the Amritsar Commissionerate. Of these, two accused have reportedly died, while investigations are currently underway against the remaining 14.
So far, former SGPC auditor Satinder Singh Kohli and ex-employee Kanwaljit Singh have been arrested in connection with the case, and the SIT has indicated that further action may follow as the probe progresses.
