Chandigarh: Punjab Police Director General Gaurav Yadav on Monday said that seven accused have been arrested so far in the murder case of Jarmal Singh, the AAP-affiliated sarpanch who was shot dead earlier this month. Briefing the media, the DGP said two shooters were arrested from Raipur in Chhattisgarh with the help of the local police, while five other accused were nabbed from Mohali and Tarn Taran in Punjab. He added that the arrests were the result of close coordination with central agencies and police forces from multiple states.
Brazen Killing at Wedding Venue
Jarmal Singh was shot dead on January 4 during a wedding ceremony at the Mary Gold Resort in Amritsar. CCTV footage captured the chilling sequence: two assailants calmly walked up to Singh, pulled out concealed pistols and shot him point-blank in the head from behind before fleeing the scene. Singh was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries.
Foreign-Based Handlers Behind the Plot
Investigations have revealed that the murder conspiracy was masterminded from abroad, with overseas handlers arranging funding, weapons and logistics from outside India. Soon after the killing, foreign-based gangsters, including Prabh Dasuwal, claimed responsibility on social media, alleging that Singh had survived three earlier assassination attempts. In a significant development, one of the key conspirators, Harnoor Singh alias Noor, was killed in a police encounter in Tarn Taran shortly after the murder.
Crackdown to Continue
DGP Yadav said intensive interrogation of the arrested accused is underway to map the entire criminal network, trace the money trail, and identify the weapon supply chain involved in the killing. Reiterating the force’s resolve, he said the Punjab Police have launched a special drive against organised crime and warned that no criminal will be spared, irrespective of where they are hiding. Police said further arrests are likely as the investigation progresses.
