Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh get relief nearly four years after the killing of the Punjabi singer
New Delhi:The Supreme Court of India on Thursday granted bail to two accused — Pawan Bishnoi and Jagtar Singh — in the 2022 murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala.
A Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta allowed the petitions filed by the accused challenging the August 1, 2025, order of the Punjab and Haryana High Court that had rejected their bail pleas. Sidhu Moosewala, 28, was shot dead on May 29, 2022, by armed assailants in Punjab’s Mansa district, a day after the state government reduced his security cover.
According to the Punjab Police, the killing was the result of an inter-gang rivalry, allegedly involving the gang led by jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.
Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, an associate of Bishnoi, had publicly claimed responsibility for the high-profile murder.
Role of the Accused
Investigators alleged that Pawan Bishnoi was linked to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang and had provided logistical support, including arranging the vehicle allegedly used in the crime at the behest of Goldy Brar.
Jagtar Singh, a neighbour of Moosewala, was accused of conducting reconnaissance of the singer’s residence before the attack.
The police have so far arrested 20 of the 24 accused named in the chargesheet, while the remaining four are believed to be outside India.
Delay in Trial Cited
During the hearing, counsel for Pawan Bishnoi argued that the accused had already spent more than 3 years and 10 months in jail and that the trial was progressing slowly.
The lawyer told the court that 180 prosecution witnesses had been listed. At the same time, even the examination of the alleged eyewitness had only been partly completed, indicating that the trial could take several more years.
The Supreme Court Bench also raised questions about the progress of the trial and sought clarity on issues such as the use of mobile phones inside jail during the investigation.
The Punjab government opposed the bail plea, arguing that the accused had received multiple calls from co-accused persons regarding the arrangement of the vehicle used in the crime. The court ultimately granted bail to the two accused while the trial in the high-profile murder case continues.
