Chandigarh: Amid the political fallout from the recent Haryana Rajya Sabha election that witnessed cross-voting by some Congress legislators, Ram Kishan Gujjar, Working President of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, has resigned from the primary membership and all posts in the Indian National Congress.

In a resignation letter dated March 17, 2026, addressed to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Gujjar stated that he was stepping down from the party with immediate effect. “I hereby submit my resignation from the membership and all posts/responsibilities from the Indian National Congress Party,” the letter reads.

The development assumes significance as Gujjar is the husband of Shelly Choudhary, whose name had surfaced among the legislators suspected of cross-voting during the Rajya Sabha election on March 16.

The election saw intense political drama after the Congress alleged that five of its MLAs cross-voted. At the same time, four votes were declared invalid, prompting the party leadership to warn of strict disciplinary action against those responsible.

Senior Congress leader B K Hariprasad, the party’s in-charge for Haryana, had earlier said that the party would take stern action against MLAs involved in cross-voting, which impacted the outcome of the contest.

Although the Congress managed to secure one Rajya Sabha seat through its candidate Karamvir Boudh, the cross-voting controversy exposed internal divisions within the party’s legislative ranks.

Gujjar’s resignation now adds a new dimension to the episode, coming at a time when the Congress leadership is reviewing the conduct of its MLAs during the election.

Party leaders in Haryana have not yet issued an official statement on whether Gujjar’s resignation has been accepted or whether further disciplinary action will follow in connection with the cross-voting allegations.
