Himachal Pradesh – The death toll in rain-related tragedies in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district has risen to 10, following the recovery of five more bodies on Wednesday. The region has been battered by 11 cloudburst incidents, four flash floods, and a major landslide, most of which occurred on Tuesday, leaving a trail of destruction and disrupting daily life across several districts.

According to officials, search and rescue operations are underway for 34 people who remain missing. Two teams each from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), assisted by local police and home guards, are engaged in round-the-clock rescue efforts.

Widespread Rain Havoc: Mandi the Worst Hit

The brunt of the damage was borne by Mandi district, where cloudbursts were reported at four locations in Gohar, three in Karsog, two in Dharampur, and one in Thunag. Heavy rainfall triggered severe flooding and landslides in several remote villages, cutting off access and damaging infrastructure.

The State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC) reported the recovery of two bodies from Siyanj (Gohar), and one each from Thunag, Dhar Jarol, and Pandeev Sheel. The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.

As of Wednesday morning:

  • 182 roads in Mandi district were rendered inaccessible,

  • 633 transformers were damaged,

  • 465 water supply schemes were disrupted.

Statewide Impact: Over 280 Roads Closed, Power and Water Hit

Across Himachal Pradesh, the toll on infrastructure has been severe:

  • A total of 282 roads have been closed to traffic.

  • 1,361 electricity transformers are out of service, 633 of them in Mandi.

  • 639 water supply schemes remain non-functional across the state.

Other affected districts include:

  • Kullu (37 roads closed)

  • Shimla (33)

  • Sirmour (12)

  • Chamba (6)

  • Hamirpur (5)

  • Kangra and Una (3 each)

  • Solan (1 road)

Homes, Livelihoods Lost; Rescue Operations Continue

The devastation includes:

  • 24 houses and 12 cattle sheds damaged,

  • One bridge destroyed,

  • 30 cattle killed,

  • Over 370 people rescued, 316 of them from Mandi alone,

  • 11 people remain stranded in remote areas.

Relief teams are facing challenges due to damaged roads and adverse weather, but operations continue with urgency.

Orange Alert Issued for Coming Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rain for several parts of the state. A fresh orange alert has been issued for heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas from Friday to Sunday, raising concerns about further landslides and flash floods.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious, especially in vulnerable areas, and avoid unnecessary travel during the forecast period.
