Dehradun: Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma has been booked by the police for allegedly using indecent, obscene and offensive language during a live performance at a college event in Dehradun, intensifying the controversy surrounding the artist.
According to Dehradun Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar, the case was registered on Sunday after videos of the incident surfaced on social media, triggering public outrage.
Complaint by Student Body
The FIR was lodged based on a complaint by Pranchal Nauni, a student representative of the ‘Satyam Shivam’ student organisation at DAV College, where the event was held on Saturday.
The complaint alleged that Sharma’s conduct during the performance hurt the sentiments of students and members of the public present at the venue, crossing acceptable standards of public behaviour.
Legal Provisions Invoked
Police have registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including:
- Section 296 (obscene acts in public)
- Section 352 (intentional insult)
- Section 79 and Section 351(3) (related to criminal conduct and intimidation)
An investigation has been initiated to examine the circumstances and verify the allegations.
Event Attended by Political Leaders
The programme, organised by the students’ union, was attended earlier by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, who, however, left the venue before the alleged misconduct occurred. BJP MLA Umesh Sharma Kau was present at the event when the incident reportedly took place.
Growing Scrutiny on Public Performances
The case adds to the mounting scrutiny on performers over content and conduct during live shows, especially in educational institutions where audiences include young students.
With both legal action and institutional responses now underway, the controversy is likely to test accountability standards for public figures and the boundaries of acceptable expression in public performances.
