Chandigarh: In a notable administrative shift, the Haryana government will convene its Cabinet meeting in Gurugram on April 22 — marking the first full Cabinet sitting outside Chandigarh in nearly a decade. The move is being widely seen as a reflection of Gurugram’s rising political and economic significance within the state.

According to an official communication issued by the General Administration Department, the meeting will begin at 9 am at the PWD (B&R) rest house, with around 12 key proposals expected to be taken up.

Symbolic shift towards NCR’s economic hub

While Gurugram has hosted departmental reviews and administrative meetings in the past, a full Cabinet बैठक outside the state capital remains rare. Traditionally, such high-level deliberations have been confined to Chandigarh, with only a few exceptions in New Delhi.

By bringing the Cabinet to Gurugram — Haryana’s financial and corporate nerve centre — the government appears to be signalling a more decentralised governance approach, particularly towards the NCR region, which contributes significantly to the state’s revenue.

Key issues likely on the agenda

Among the proposals expected to be discussed is a pending matter related to Leader of Opposition Bhupinder Singh Hooda regarding a rent waiver for his government accommodation. The issue had earlier been deferred after ministers sought detailed clarity on expenditure for maintenance, utilities, and workforce. Officials estimate the dues at around ₹16.5 lakh.

The Cabinet is also likely to review:

  • Ongoing infrastructure and development projects
  • Urban governance challenges in NCR districts
  • Policy issues linked to industrial unrest in Manesar
  • Wage and labour-related concerns

Senior ministers, including Anil Vij, Krishan Lal Panwar, Rao Narbir Singh, Mahipal Dhanda, Shruti Choudhry and Vipul Goel, are expected to attend alongside the Chief Minister.

Tight security, extensive preparations

Security arrangements have been significantly stepped up across Gurugram ahead of the meeting. Traffic diversions, controlled access to the venue, and deployment of police personnel at key junctions are part of the preparedness plan. Administrative teams are also coordinating logistics, including accommodation for ministers and senior officials.

Timing carries political and economic weight

The timing of the Cabinet meeting is crucial. It comes amid industrial tensions in Manesar, ongoing debates around urban infrastructure, and growing demands for better governance in the rapidly expanding NCR belt.

More than just a change of venue, the Gurugram meeting is being viewed as a strategic outreach to Haryana’s most dynamic economic region, signalling that policy attention is increasingly shifting closer to where the state’s growth engines are located.
