Chandigarh: Haryanvi singer Masoom Sharma on Friday issued a public apology for allegedly using abusive and objectionable language during a live performance at DAV College, Dehradun, an incident that had triggered sharp reactions and led to his summons by the Haryana State Commission for Women.
Expressing regret, Sharma said, “I apologise for the incident. Those who my utterances have hurt, I sincerely apologise to them.” He clarified that this was the first time he had apologised for any controversy, asserting that his career had been built on his music and not on negative publicity.
Threat claims and mental stress cited.
Explaining his conduct, Sharma claimed that he was under severe mental stress at the time of the performance due to a threat to his life. He alleged that a person known to him had issued threats a day before the event, even warning his family about a possible attack.
“My mental state was not right. I was disturbed after receiving threats… My family was also under stress,” he said, adding that a complaint regarding the threat had been emailed to the Uttarakhand Police. He, however, declined to reveal the identity of the individual involved.
Officials confirmed that Sharma is currently under security cover provided by Haryana Police.
Summons by Women Commission, reply submitted.
The controversy had prompted the Haryana State Commission for Women to summon Sharma to appear before it on April 18. The Commission, in its notice, termed the alleged conduct as “unbecoming of a public figure” and raised concerns over maintaining dignity and respect, especially in the presence of students.
Sharma stated that he has already submitted a written reply to the Commission and is unlikely to appear on the scheduled date. “I will wait for further directions from the Commission,” he said.
Background of the incident
The incident took place during a college event on April 11 at DAV College, Dehradun, which was attended earlier by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. According to reports, Sharma allegedly lost his temper and used offensive language on stage after the Chief Minister had left the venue, leaving students, staff, and security personnel uncomfortable.
The episode has since sparked a broader debate around the accountability of public performers and the standards expected during campus events, even as Sharma’s apology attempts to defuse the controversy.
