The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government is set to convene a special two-day session of the Vidhan Sabha next week to deliberate on the escalating drug menace in the state and the recent arrest of senior Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case linked to alleged drug money.
According to sources, the session is tentatively scheduled for July 10 and 11. However, final confirmation is expected to be made during a meeting of the Punjab Council of Ministers, convened by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday morning.
Drug Crisis in Focus
The special session is being planned against the backdrop of intensifying statewide efforts to curb narcotics trafficking and addiction. Officials said the government aims to use the platform to present data, highlight enforcement measures, and urge cross-party cooperation in tackling the drug crisis, which continues to pose a serious social and law-and-order challenge in Punjab.
Majithia Arrest to Spark Political Fireworks
The arrest of Bikram Singh Majithia, a key Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister, on June 25 is expected to dominate the proceedings. The ruling party is likely to highlight the case as a sign of its commitment to cracking down on political protection of drug networks. In contrast, opposition parties are expected to raise concerns over the timing and motive behind the arrest.
A senior official noted, “The idea is to allow all political parties a fair chance to express their stand on the issue and to send a clear message to the public that the government is serious about eradicating drugs from Punjab.”
No Governor’s Nod Required
Interestingly, since the previous Vidhan Sabha session, held on May 5, ot been formally prorogued, the government is not required to seek fresh approval from the Governor to convene the special sitting. This procedural detail has enabled the Mann government to convene the session swiftly.
Political Significance
The timing of the session is politically crucial. With increasing public pressure and opposition attacks over the persistence of drug networks in the state, the AAP government is looking to reclaim the narrative and showcase decisive action. The session also comes ahead of the monsoon season and could lay the groundwork for further legislative or administrative measures on the issue.
